In conjunction with Greater DC Cares MLK Day of Service, Citizen Academy will be examining issues that Dr. King was passionate about in the DC community. Dr. King worked passionately on many social justice issues, including education, healthcare and poverty. Did you know:

· Only 20 percent of students in elementary schools in DC’s poorest neighborhoods score at or above grade level, while 60 percent of students in schools in the lowest-poverty neighborhoods score at grade level or better.

· While DC has one of the highest physician-to-population ratios, we still have 300,000 residents living in medically underserved areas.

· Almost half of the residents in the three large zip codes east of the Anacostia River have incomes below 200% of the federal poverty line. These areas are almost entirely made up of African American residents.

Join Greater DC Cares to discuss education, healthcare, and poverty in the DC region at this Citizen Academy panel. Speakers include DC Fiscal Policy Institute, the Washington Lawyer's Committee for Civil Rights & Urban Development, and more.
